Silver Diamine Fluoride (also known as SDF) is a treatment approved by the American Dental Association that helps stop the advancement of cavities (dental caries), and stops the spread of disease. Application of SDF is simple, quick, and totally comfortable.
Now that stores are already gearing up for Halloween, and with Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner, we recommend parents prepare their kids for the season of sweets.
A treatment of Silver Diamine Fluoride is like a shield of protection that stops existing cavities from growing. It gives moms and dads the rest assurance that the season of candies, pumpkin pies, and spiced frappuccinos, won’t turn a tiny cavity into an off-shore drilling rig by the time the New Year starts.
How Does SDF Work?
We start by brushing the teeth (without paste) and rinsing. We identify carious teeth (cavities), isolate them, keep them dry, and remove all excess debris. SDF has a dual mechanism of action, with the silver component offering an anti-microbial agent that kills bacteria and prevents growth of new biofilm. The fluoride acts to prevent further demineralization of tooth structure. A microbrush is dipped in a drop of SDF and placed on the cavity for two minutes. Excess SDF is removed and the patient/parents are instructed to not eat or drink for one hour.
